Tropical Aquariums – Selecting The Perfect Tank Size For Beginners

leave a comment »

Let me help you select your tropical aquariums tank size that will be best for your very first fish tank. Since there are so many variables and options that can go into proper aquarium tank size selection, I am going to make an assumption that you will want to start off with a basic community tropical fish aquarium. I’ll be discussing other types of aquarium tank configurations in future articles here.

It is all to common for first time tropical aquarium hobbyists to naturally think that they would be better off by starting out by setting up a small aquarium in the 5 gallon to 10 gallon aquarium size. These smaller fish tanks actually can take much more work than larger aquarium tank sizes. Small tanks are extremely susceptible to fast heat gain and heat loss. These small bodies of water are much more susceptible to all types of rapid environment changes including pollution introduction. A small amount of pollution introduced into a small tank can reek total havoc on your tropical fish community because the pollution will be much more concentrated in a smaller fish tank. Larger size aquariums give you and your fish a much needed and greater margin for error.

Now let us look at cost of tank selection. Large tanks can get expensive to purchase and need much more room, as well as a very sturdy floor to place it on. Remember that water is actually very heavy. Water weighs a little over eight pounds per gallon! So make sure the location you want to place your tropical aquarium can support the extreme weight of the tank you choose.

Tropical aquariums come in two distinct versions. A tall tank version and a long tank version. For your very first fish tank I would recommend selecting a long aquarium fish tank version. These long tank versions have more water surface that allows for more needed oxygen to be introduced into the tropical aquarium tank naturally.

I know, you are saying let’s get to what size tank! The ideal size for your first tank I would recommend is either a 29 gallon long fish tank or a 30 gallon long fish tank. These medium size tropical aquarium tanks allow for much easier maintenance than smaller tanks and also allows for a larger selection of fish and plants. They are also less expensive and weigh less than larger tanks.

In conclusion the bottom line is that the 29 and 30 gallon long tropical aquariums are excellent selections for people just entering the tropical fish hobby for the very first time. Now that you know what size tank to choose, it’s time for you to start researching what types of equipment, tropical fish and plants you want to have in your very first tropical aquarium or tropical aquariums.
